You probably have at least three or more different ways to pay inside your wallet or purse right now.
If there’s no cash, you’ve still got credit cards, debit cards, gift cards and of course personal checks.
There’s also money orders, cashiers checks, travelers checks and online services like PayPal when you want to buy something online.
So with all of these different options – do we really need to keep using personal checks?
It may seem like writing out personal checks is an ancient way of conducting business. I mean come on – why slow things down with paper checks when everything else is electronic?
But there are quite a few situations when you won’t want to be without personal checks. Here are five such situations:
1. The Small Business Contractor: Let’s say you need to have someone like a plumber or electrician visit your home. Many of these individual contractors won’t be accepting credit cards, and it’s unlikely you’ll have enough cash on hand. The best way to pay in situations like this is by personal check.
2. The Rent Check: Even people who despise personal checks admit the one reason they write a check every month is to pay the rent. That’s a payment you probably won’t want to miss unless you have a very forgiving landlord.
3. The Babysitter and Paper Boy: Thanks to debit cards, we carry around a lot less cash than we used to. But there are some people – similar to those contractors – who you’ll need to pay from time to time, and chances are you won’t be able to swipe a card. A lot of times these are young people providing your household with a service like watching your children, delivering your paper, or mowing your lawn. Believe me – you don’t want to get on the babysitter’s bad side.
4. The Church Offering: Even if you only sit your butt in the pew a few times every year. It’s not a bad idea to support the church or synagogue you attend. You can write it off on your taxes and those places of worship are most likely giving back to the community you live in. Personal checks are the most common way to give to your church – at least until they start installing credit card machines in the backs of the seats.
5. The Unexpected Issues: We’ve all been in situations where for some reason our cards are being declined. Maybe the credit card company thinks there was suspicious activity, maybe there was some sort of bank error. In this case, it would definitely be a good idea to have some checks on hand as a back-up.
You’ve probably also been at a store when “the lines were down” and they are unable to run debit and credit cards. Or maybe your Internet goes down at home, but you need to get some bills paid. These are all great reasons to have personal checks in your pocket.
So when you get down to that last box of checks – don’t waste time. Reorder checks from Check Advantage and save as much as 75% off what your bank charges to order checks.
